I joined the School of Information Studies at McGill University in the Fall of 2013. I am an enthusiastic and passionate teacher who has received excellent reviews from students, as well as five commendations for teaching excellence. My teaching philosophy focuses on encouraging students to actively develop a theoretical foundation of the subject area and be able to apply theoretical principles in practice. This involves exposing students to exemplary work or literature reviews to assist them in learning key concepts, models, frameworks and methodologies. Once they have acquired an appropriate theoretical foundation, I incorporate practice-based teaching methods into the learning process. Some examples include the use of case analysis, interactions with industry partners, and the assignment of term-long group work that simulates actual project objectives and deliverables. I also provide regular and detailed feedback to aid in enhancement of student understanding. To encourage engagement and constructive debates, I incorporate e-learning (e.g. supplemental online video lectures, collaboration and discussion), which, in turn, creates additional opportunities for richer discussion, guest lectures, case studies, and leading-edge research in the classroom. This has the effect of further empowering students and allowing them to absorb material and study at a pace more comfortable for them.
